The Elizabeth Layton Center is seeking an Engagement Specialist/Crisis Case Manager to provide services full-time to youth/children/families meeting the criteria of Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED) in Ottawa, Kansas.

This position helps engage new CBS referrals in service and those in crisis. Duties include providing services individually and in group settings. Services may be provided on-site, at schools, in the community and family home. Paid training to achieve case management certification is provided. Experience working with school-age youth and bachelors degree in psychology, sociology or human services preferred. EOE

The incumbent will provide case management/therapeutic services to youth with a severe emotional disturbance (SED). In coordination with therapeutic staff, the incumbent will assist youth and families by providing information, education, and training to build knowledge, develop skills, and change attitudes with a goal of increasing the consumer’s independence, productivity, self-determination, integration, and inclusion in the community. The majority of the Engagement Specialist’s time will be spent providing services to youth in the family home, educational setting, program site or other community settings in order to stabilize a crisis situation, with minimal time spent at the Center. The Engagement Specialist will engage new SED clientele and assist clients in transition from hospital and /or PRTF to home. This position reports directly to the CBS Director or designee.

• Participates in treatment planning based on best practice theories and applies interventions
• Development of personal plan/goal sheet in conjunction with consumer’s needs
• Engagement and reengagement of clients via telephone or in home visits
• Crisis de-escalation and assistance to outpatient emergency services
• Obtains location and the process of acquiring resources; coordinates with area agencies
• Direct involvement in planning and advocacy in areas of: Education/Vocation, Residential, Financial, Health , Leisure, and Social Supports
• Education to family in symptomatology, awareness of relapse indicators and handling of crisis
• Must provide transportation to and from various program activities (must maintain a good driving record)
• Assists in collection of program data and provides reports as necessary to immediate supervisor
• Works in conjunction with other mental health center staff

• Meets direct service expectations of 47% of time worked
• Works a few nights until after 6pm. each week
• Meets deadlines for daily paperwork and reports
• Provides quality documentation
• Provides supportive intervention when needs arise outside of scheduled hours
• Assists other case managers and consumers as needed to help meet agency’s needs
• Performs other duties as deemed appropriate by immediate supervisor or designee
• Complies with ELC policies and procedures

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience necessary to meet State of Kansas licensing regulations
• Possesses the minimum qualifications as documented in the Kansas Case Management Program Standards
• Familiarity with mental health theory and practice
• Clean driving record
• Incumbent must pass a security check as required by Medicaid Regulations

• Relates a positive approach to complex mental health issues
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, community agencies, and consumers
• Ability to be sensitive to cultural and ethnic differences
• Ability to safely perform major job responsibilities, with or without reasonable accommodations
